The cabins
Two of them, both originals from 1963, both refit with a firm belief in windows.
Vale
The work cabin: 24 seats, panoramic windows, and the better view on the westbound leg. Named for the valley it serves.
1963, refit 2019Signal redWhitethorn
The chartered cabin: brass rails, four corner benches, and the first evening light. Booked whole for sundowners and proposals.
1963, refit 2021Brass & redThe refits
Both cabins went back to the works this decade with the same instruction: new mechanicals, original windows. Vale's 2019 refit replaced its bogies and kept its 1963 window line. Whitethorn's 2021 refit re-brassed the rails by hand and added exactly one modern thing: a discreet ramp plate for level boarding.
The original freight hook from 1927 hangs in the Vale-bottom shed, greased and inspected, in case the valley ever needs proving wrong about progress.
